At Lindridge, we have carefully designed our curriculum to reflect our commitment to inclusion, communication and ensuring that every child can "Discover Life in all its Fullness." As part of this commitment, we have chosen to teach British Sign Language (BSL) as our Modern Foreign Language.

We believe that language learning should open doors, build understanding and help children connect with others. By learning BSL, our pupils develop communication skills that enable them to engage with and appreciate the Deaf community, while also fostering empathy, respect and awareness of different ways people communicate. This inclusive approach reflects our school values and helps children understand that everyone has a voice and deserves to be heard.

Our BSL curriculum is guided by School of Signs, a specialist programme designed to make learning British Sign Language accessible, engaging and enjoyable for children. Through interactive lessons, songs, stories and practical activities, pupils progressively build their confidence and fluency in signing while developing their understanding of Deaf culture and the importance of inclusive communication.

Throughout their learning journey, children are encouraged to use signing in meaningful contexts across school life, helping to create an environment where communication is valued and celebrated in its many forms. Learning BSL also supports pupils' wider communication skills, including listening, memory, concentration and self-expression.

By the time they leave Lindridge, we want our pupils to be confident communicators who appreciate diversity, understand the importance of inclusion and recognise the positive impact that learning another language can have on building connections with others.
