Our class topic, for this half term is ‘Worlds Apart’, which is a geography-based topic. During this topic, we will study, learn about and develop our understanding of the world’s locational knowledge – identifying the position and significance of latitude, longitude, Equator, Northern Hemisphere, Southern Hemisphere, the Tropics of Cancer and Capricorn, Arctic and Antarctic Circle, the Prime / Greenwich Meridian and time zones (including day and night), and the world’s physical geography: climate zones and biomes. The pupils will compare and contrast the following climate regions: Arctic/North Pole, Antarctic/South Pole, Deserts and Rainforest areas.

In Science, we will be studying ‘Electricity’. Through RE, the key question we will be exploring is: ‘What kind of King is Jesus?’

In English, we will be reading the book: Wolf Brother from where we will be doing all our guided reading and writing activities for the half term. Spellings will continue to be tested on a Friday morning.

We will be focussing on operation fluency, fractions, ratio & proportion, decimals and percentages and starting to review algebra in Maths for this half term. Froggy maths will continue on a Friday morning.

Please see the links to the topic overview, the topic fact sheet and a copy of our class's Spring Term 2020 newsletter.

Homework: This will continue to be via the CGP books. Both year groups will be expected to complete the relevant sections (as shown below). Pupils should mark it prior to a ‘homework’ briefing on a Friday morning (however I am introducing an additional session on a Monday afternoon too!)

On a Friday (or Monday), if the children have any areas to discuss, we will go through the week’s homework to discuss approaches and areas of uncertainty. Please ask the children to come and see me should they have any concerns or queries with their homework that need my attention sooner….

In addition, pupils will be given spellings each week. The children have been grouped for the half term and all have copies of their own weekly spellings for the whole half term. Please see links on the class webpage to the spellings for the half term.
Thank you in anticipation of your support in helping your children with their homework. It is important pupils have their homework (CGP) books in school each day so that I can liaise with them at any time.

Spellings: Group 1, Group 2, Group 3 & Group 4:
Week 1 spellings will be tested Friday 10/01/2020
Week 2 spellings will be tested Friday 17/01/2020
Week 3 spellings will be tested Friday 24/01/2020
Week 4 spellings will be tested Friday 31/01/2020
Week 5 spellings will be tested Friday 07/02/2020
Week 6 spellings will be tested Friday 14/02/2020

For this half term, PE will be on a Friday afternoon and will consist of developing the pupils’ skills and techniques linked to the invasion games: Netball and Handball. In addition, it is proposed that the pupils plan and dance routine linked to our topic or the song we are working on in Music. PE kit is required to be in school every day so, that should a change in the timetable occur, the children are prepared.

All the children need a water bottle, in school, which is filled with fresh water on a daily basis (named) and a named waterproof coat, ideally with a hood, so that children can go out to play whatever the weather!

Here’s to a great 1st Spring Half Term 2020!
